Default 04 Accent Gas problems..maybe??

Ok, I know a thing or two about cars, but not alot, especially my own car...

I have a 2004 Hyundai Accent, runs great and all, but recently i went on a 300 mile or so trip from salt lake city to las vegas...anyways everything was going ok but on my way back i stopped in mesquite, and i went into a store and when i came back out i started the car and it said i was out of gas, then it slowly started going back up, i went to a gas station and filled up and saw it only took about 5 gallons (about a half tank or so) and the meter somewhat corrected itself...anyways when i get back to slc its been a week or two now and it seems my gas consumption is getting lower, on my trip i average about 350 miles/tank, so far ive used about 4/10ths of my tank and ive only driven 90 miles or so, it seems my mpg has gone from around 35 to almost 20..or somewhere in that range, i have no check engine light, i need to get a transmission fluid flush but i dont know what that would have to do with my gas consumption

does anybody know what could be causing this?

Sorry but there are just too many things it could be. Without actually looking at the car, anything we could tell you would just be a guess. I would suggest taking it to a qualified mechanic and getting it looked at.

Go to Autozone for a free ODB II scan and see if there's any trouble codes stored. If I had to venture a guess, sounds like a pressure problem with the fuel system, maybe you need a fuel filter.

ok, ill try going to autozone, they do that for free right?

seems like a pressure problem to me also, i would be relieved if it was just a fuel filt

I dont know if this helps at all, when i drove down there I fueled up in Arizona and the octane they have there is 87, where in utah its 85....could this also cause issues?

If you are still under warranty, go to the dealer and let them fix it for free.
