New member, I'm looking for info and links to rebuilding the 2004 Accent Transmission. Any help is greatly appreciated.

by the way, the fluid is nearly black, but no signs of metal in the pan. How deep should I go?
Also, it's looking like the whole engine/transmission pack has to come out together. Yes?

no reverse
when up to operating temp., slams into drive(1st)
will not shift to 2nd, except sometimes at high rpm
i do not know the symtems prior to failure except that it "banged" than would not shift. Father-inlaw drove home (15miles) in 1st gear very slow.
I towed it to my place, drove it around up to 30mph, shifted once or twice. still no reverse.

I think it is toast from what you describe. If you insist on a DIY project, I think I'd buy an already rebuilt tranny and torque convertor. Otherwise, I'd find a good transmission mechanic to do the work for you. The guts of these things are quite complicated and usually require a number of special tools that your average person doesn't have. The HMA Service site (Hyundai Service Website) has instructions regarding removal.

I am going to rebuild the trans. With these symtoms, what would be a likely item(relay, pulse generator, valve, etc.) that would have gone bad? Bands are understood. I'll do a total tare down and clean. (I made the mistake of not getting a diagnostic before I started.)

It could be most any of those items. Be mindful of the ball bearings that can roll out of nowhere during disassembly.
