Default To change or not to change trans fluid.. 2017 Accent 180k miles.

Hello,

I know this is going to bring up some debate, but I have a 2017 Hyundai Accent Hatchback with 180k miles and I never never changed the transmission fluid. The deal allegedly did it when I bought the car around 120k miles ago but nothing shows on my vehicle history. So I'm going to assume it has never been changed.

I've noticed the car just doesn't have the umph like it used to. So far trans still shifts pretty good for a car that old. 90% of my mileage is all highway miles on it, running in 6th gear. My torque converter slip range reads from around -5 to 5 rpm aside from idling. My ATF temperature stays between 140f-160f depending on the outside temperature.
My issue is you can kinda feel it shift at lower rpms but no clunking or jerking so far. It's pretty smooth above 2k rpms. And it just doesn't seem to have the power it once had. Although when I don't let the car warm up it shifts a bit harder, nothing major yet though. So I always let the car warm up before I drive off.

I've seen mixed results online about the fluid. Some say drain and fill but don't flush. Some say never change it (old gear heads like my dad). And a few said change a quart or so at a time.

I really wanna make this car last another year until it's paid off and I can trade it in. If it was paid off and I had another car I would just roll the dice and do the drain and fill. But it's my daily driver and it's almost paid off.

What's your advice on this? I like the idea of using a transfer pump and doing ~1qt at a time every other week.

Considering the high mileage and lack of prior transmission fluid changes, a cautious approach is recommended. Opt for a drain and fill rather than a flush to avoid dislodging debris that may have accumulated. Changing a quart or so at a time over subsequent intervals is also a prudent method, preventing potential issues associated with abrupt changes. Consult your vehicle's manual for specific recommendations and, if uncertain, seek advice from a professional mechanic. Regular transmission maintenance, even at this stage, can help enhance longevity and performance while minimizing risks associated with sudden fluid changes.
