hatch support struts needed
What's up with the lack of replacement gas struts for the rear hatch on 2001 Accents? You can find them up to 99 and after 2004, but 2000-2003 are just not anywhere to be found at an affordable price. Suggestions? Will some other year/model work without mods?

My local dealer wants NINETY BUCKS EACH for the lift support struts!! Can anyone tell me if the 1999 or 2004 year struts might fit? Or maybe some other year/model? They can be had from numerous sources for 28 bucks each...

The lift supports on my '98 gave out long ago. Although a bit tacky, I've been keeping a locking pliers in the trunk that I clamp on the support shaft to hold it open. It's the poor man's solution. (Just make sure it's clamped on good & tight... A falling hatch could do some serious damage to you!)

accent lift struts
overall length in fully extended (hatch up) condition 22 3/4 inches, from mounting center to center. OD of gas cylinder is roughly 5/8 inches. Is this close to any later model hyundai, accent or other?? A minute with a tape measure would be greatly appreciated. If I can find one that's close, that's all it would take...

Overall lengths...
On my 1998: ~21-5/16" Open / ~14-3/8" Closed / ~.870" OD
On my 2010: ~22" Open / ~14-1/4" Closed / ~.720" OD
5/8" would equal .625" for your OD
Because the lift supports are concealed when the hatch is closed, closed measurements were estimated by the wear marks on the shafts. Incidentally, if you are worried about cost, have you tried calling your local junk yard?

lift struts
I remeasured the body diameter and it was .71 - so I'm guessing it's the same strut body as your 2010. As the tubes are designed with a little "overtravel" to allow some space for the compressed gas, I'm betting that I can put the 2010 strut on and it will work perfectly! Thanks for the help with the dimensions. That's just what I needed. I'll let you know how it works out after I've got a new set.
