Manual Transmission Fluid 2002

Hi there,

I have the 1.6L 2002 Hyundai Accent. My transmission has been having issues going into second without making a quick grinding noise.

My friend suggested putting in new manual transmission gear oil to but I am not sure what type I need to get or where to put it on the car.

Could someone please help?

Hyundai specifies manual trans (gear oil) with a "GL4" rating.... weight being 75/85. and it is a synthetic blend.

DO NOT use gear oil with "GL5" rating... the chemical package will ruin the brass used in the synchro rings.

Correct oil is available at Hyundai and Kia dealer, part number is 08950-00020,,, be advised, it is kinda pricey at $15/qt I think it is..

You might be able to find something on the open market, we used to use Penzoil out of 5 gallon pail at last dealer I was at, and the Hyundai stuff on warranty tickets.

Easiest way to fill is to remove the reverse light switch on top, use long funnel and fill through top..... be sure to remove fill plug on side of trans case so when oil reach correct level, it'll run out the fill hole to show you at correct level,,, install fill plug, then re-install switch.

ah good finally someone else that knows you can substitute GL-4 with GL-5. good work;)

for the OP: if changing the oil does not fix, you likely have worn synchro gears. if some tool put a GL-5 gear oil in i can say from making that mistake myself (and correcting it after a short time thankfully) even just having that wrong oil will give you a bit of grinding from the trans.

myself i find either amsoil or redline full synthetic GL-4 worth the investment. its usually cheaper than the hyundai stuff anyhow! been running the amsoil and love it, made a world of difference.
