Misfire
 

I used a Scantool on my 2000 Hyundai Accent to figure out why the engine was rattling when I start off and sometimes between gears. It gave me 3 codes:

Random misfire,
1st misfire
4th misfire

Talked to my father (typical Dad mechanic) and he supposed it was a timing issue?

The problem happens right at the beginning of the pedal push, it also happens for a good mile when it is sub-zero outside. I can put the pedal to the floor and maby go 15 mph. In the extreme cold, it dosn't sound like i've got all the cylinders firing at all.

To anyone, is Dad likely right?

I've replaced the air filter and spark plugs to no avail.

anybody ever look at a 4 banger and notice cylinder # 1 and 4 reciprocate together and 2-3 are married?

if'n you didn't have a random misfire in the list of codes I'd say it was a coil issue, but not sure.

wrong timing would cause it to run bad all the time, not just when cold.

are the plug wires good and were they installed properly??

did the problem start before you put the plugs in or after?

i had a similiar problem before and it turned out to be my plug wires. they looked fine from the outside but inside they had corroded and were no longer making good contact.

If your asking me and I'm no gear-head by any means but, I'd pull the plugs, 1 & 4. Crank the engine to see what kind of spark your getting. Also, you'd might want to perhaps replace the wires & make sure they're on correctly.

Ok, I checked a few things. Heres what I found:

The 1st cylinder plug wire is arking at the coil every 300 - 400 revolutions.

Obviously, thats the problem, but, is the problem the coil or the wire or something else?

Any advice would be great, thanks everyone, you guys are great!

yeah, i can most definately say it is just the wire.

Replace the wires and then go from there.
