Timing Belt Replacement?

So I see the timing belt is to be replaced every 60k... what are the downsides to holding off on this? I asked my mechanic and he said to just run it until it wears out and needs to be replaced. What do you guys think? Is this good advice? Apart from a voided warranty, what else is at risk?

THanks!

I can fix it. My dad has got this ultimate set of tools...

...really though,
When a timing belt is "worn out" it will let you know by breaking. This will, at the very least, strand you right where it breaks. The engine stops immediately. More likely is that it will stop and end up looking something like the images above (well lets hope not THAT bad.) On some engines, they are designed such that when the timing belt breaks, there is no damage done, but I have no idea what engines are like that. Engineers call the ones that kill themselves "interference" engines. Look yours up with a web search and maybe you can tell if yours is an interference engine or not.

The Alpha engine in the Accent is an interference engine. If the belt breaks, damage will be done. Change it now before it breaks.

Thanks for the info on the Alpha, Nova.
The pics you posted above... What is the story on that engine? It looks like someone scattered it at 120mph coming down pikes peak, and then used engine braking all the way to the bottom of the mountain.
Or was it something else?

2 different engines. Read the stories:
