Default RE: Engine noise

I went in to Ft Worth today to run some errands and decided to visit another Hyundai dealer which also happened to be somewhat larger and presumably more experienced than my dealer. The Service Writer told me they had seen this 'engine ticking' several times and in all cases it turned out to be the fuel injection system. They referrred to it as "pulsating" which happens when the injector squits a mixture of air and gas. It happens on a random basis, on different makes of Hyundai vehicles, causes no harm whatever, and I should not be concerned. (Its true I don't hear it inside the car). At this point I am not going to worry about it unless something chages.

I looked at the new Veracruz and I must say I was quite impressed. The Limited model will not be out for several months but it will come with a Navigation System, DVD Player, and XM Radio. Buyers will also have the option of NO MOONROOF. I did not take time to drive the vehicle but did sit in it. I will take a serious look when the 2008 Models come out. It was every bit as nice as the Lexus 350 and its larger than the Pilot or Highlander.

Default RE: Engine noise

The noise in my Azera is/was not injector noise. I can recognize the injector noise in addition to the abnormal one.

My dealer said it was due to the timing belt tensioner. There is a service bulletin about early models, but it said the noise was not harmful and only on cold startup. Anyway they said it would fix my noise but it would take three days to pull the engine and fix it. I reluctantly agreed, partly because I kept bitching about it every service visit, and it did bother me, a lot.

TWO weeks later, after claiming they had to backorder an engine mount, the car was returned to me. I had it one day and found oil on my garage floor. Took it back today and they now say one of the valve cover gaskets was damaged in the repair process. Now they will have it until "maybe Monday", because they have to order the gasket. I don't know what company takes 3 days to get a part, you can overnight anything to anywhere now. I think they are afraid to tell me it takes that much time to fix it.

Thankfully I have a Sonata loaner, so I am not without a car. But I have lost confidence in my dealers repair department.By the way, the Sonata is very nice to drive, and actually has a more precise steering feel than the Azera. The Azera is a much smoother ride and of course much bigger all around.

The Azera has a 3.8 liter that has an internal timing chain. Unles you have the 2.7 V6, that has the timing belt, you have a chaint tensioner. If the dealer said it is a belt tensioner...no wonder they can't fix it since they are looking for a belt tensioner that is not thererather than a chain tensioner. Did they mean the serpentine belt tensioner? That's external and does not require engine removal. Seems like your dealer is using your car as anOJTproject for their mechanics.

It is a timingchain tensioner. I used the wrong term. I have seen the Service Bulletin for the Azera timing chain tensioner on the Hyundai service website, so I know it is a knownproblem.

As forthe OJT, I can take pride that I am helping out the next customer !!!

Azera has been back in my possession for a week now. Everything seems to be working. I haven't heard "the" noise, yet. I hope my dealer appreciates the $2000 they will get from the warranty work.
By the way.. I shamed them into programming my door locks to lock at 15MPH. It was the least they could do after a 3 week repair job.

Thanks for the update and please keep us notified of any changes. I have noticed my 'noise' has become more erratic, sometimes it's there and other times it's not. If it's ticking when I am near the Dealer I am going to have Sales listen to it to get confirmation for the Service Department.

Default NEWBIE... Hearing the noise...

Hello Everyone!

My wife has a 2006 Ultimate (Limited) Azera with 16k on the clock...

I have heard this noise for 3 weeks or so figuring it was a loose piece of metal or one with the rubber damper is worn...
The noise has been noticeable after EVERY single oil change. And still nothing has changed... Ours is a CLICK-CLICK-CLICK ----pause---- CLICK-CLICK----pause--- CLICK CLICK CLICK....
I have no faith in my dealership I bought my wifes car from. They didn't even finish the rear window shade repair... They left it halfass and I showed them after inspecting it in the service pick up area... So yes I am worried if this is a problem with the internals of our car... THEY won't touch it...

Please keep me & everyone posted on SYNTHETIC oil or Dealer repairs / Fixes...???

Thanks,

Default RE: NEWBIE... Hearing the noise...

[:'(]About 3 weeks ago we began hearing a new noise, something like a sewing machine. The pitch of the noise changed with the rpm's of the engine including when it shifted gears. I took it in to Hyundai and they determined it was the bearings in the 'belt tensioner', and they ordered a new one.

The ordered part came in and I left the car with them yesterday with the understanding they would also look at the 'ticking' noise reported to them 15,000 miles ago and looked at already 4 times in the past. Well, they installed the new part and that noise is gone. Thenyhey called Hyundai Tech Service about the ticking noiseand ended up dropping the pan and checking the oil pump along with everything else they could look at. They feel the noise is coming from the lower portion of the engine and feel this was confirmed using a stethoscope.

The end result, along with agreement by Hyundai Tech Service, was to put the car back together and leave the service ticket open until the next oil change. At that time they will drop the pan again and carefully examine the oil and pan for any suspicious residue.

Draw your own conclusions, I remain dumbfounded.

tapping noise is most likely too great clearance between cam and valve tappet. It will be very expensive if allowed to continue so have dealer check valve clearance; usually the offending valve can be located by sound using medical type monitors.
Using good synthetic oil is also good advice and such oil tends to better lubricate the wiping action of the cam on the tappet than conventional oils even though both use similar additives.
The valve tappet in the 3.8 is really an upside down bucket of variable thicknesses ans is called an MLA. The thickness of the bucket determines the valve clearance by the separation of the top of the bucket and the cam base circle.
If the tappling noise goes away during warmup the clearance is likely just at the upper end of the spec. If not, the clearance needs adjustment. If memory serves the clearance is about .004 to .012 intake and .008 to .016" exhaust" but don't hold me to that. Dealers will have the specs.

They ruled the valve train out as the source in the begining and since I bought my Azera new the cost will be borne by Hyundai under the warranty. Also, I usuallywill trade it in around 50,000-60,000 miles.
