Crankshaft Snapped on 2002/1.6

Hi,

Ihave a 2002 (02) 1.6 Hyundai Coupe.

2 weeks ago i took it into my local garage as there was a squeak coming from the engine. The mechanic asked me if the timing belt had been changed, it hadnt so he fitted a new one with new aux belts. Once i got the car back the oil check light was stuck on and the performace was poor - the garage had to take it all apart again and they found a loose connection. Once i got the car back it was running very well - then disaster, less than 2 weeks later the belt started to squeal and i noticed a rattlling from the engine - i took it back to the garage and he tightened the belt tensioners which fixed the problem, he topped up the oil too as it was low, but not below the line on the dip stick. Driving it around that day the rattling would not go away so i took it back to the garage and they found that the crankshaft had snapped - my question is could the snapped crankshaft have been caused by the mechanics failure to fit the belts properly?

Its going to cost me a hell of alot of money to get this fixed.

A very suspect story. I could guess that they put the timing belt on wrong, and when they started it up it crunched the engine, but it's pure speculation. You'll never be able to prove anything.

RE: Crankshaft Snapped on 2002/1.6

It turns out that the garage is not at fault. I have seen the snapped crank and it has a hairline crack in it that must have been there since the car was manufactured. The crack was inside the crank so it could not have been seen until it snapped.
I am still waiting for the main bearings to come from Hyundai as there are none in the UK at the moment. Once i have got the car back i will be writing a letter to hyundai asking them to pay for the repairs as the crank should have not been put into my car in the first place, they should have tested the crank before it was fitted. I am lucky that it was not worse and it didnt cause me to crash the car. I have taken legal advice on this as i work for a solicitors.
I've had enough of the car and as soon as i get it back i'm part ex'ing it.
