$543 for a timing belt? Does this sound right?
 

My 2006 elantra has 135k miles on it. The Timing belt was done once at 70k miles and I've read that this is a major issue with our cars so I want to be a bit proactive again. THe thing is they told me that when doing the timing belt I should also do the water pump and a coolant service. The total for all this was $543 after tax.

What do you guys think? Does this sound reasonable? I think the last time the water pump and coolant flush was done was also around 70k miles but i honestly cannot remember. Nor did I save the old receipts so I have no basis for comparison.

add maybe 1hr labor for water pump and coolant

You went this far, should finish it off with thermostat too, you overhauling the cooling system, finish the job.

2.0 will not take over heat.. replace t-stat every 60,000 as precaution, coolant every 2yr/30,000 as a guide.

thanks. in the quote they have something listed as a timing belt kit for $73, does this include the other belts? What are the specific other belts that should be changed?

Seems cheap compared to rates around here. I purchased a timing belt kit [belt, tensioner, and idler], Gates, for $50 from Amazon. The Bosch water pump was a little more, don't recall if $50 or $70. And the three accessory belts, AC, water pump, alternator, could be $30 more, depending on warranty and quality. The labor for the timing belt runs at least $400 in most shops, not all, but most. And the parts could easily be doubled in price in shops. The prices I quoted are rock bottom from looking around. The shops like to make some profit from the parts.

Actually, I think you got a bargain there. Now it's possible to find a shade tree mechanic who will do this for $60 instead of $400 labor but the aggravation may not be worth waiting for his highness to get to work :(

Sounds reasonable, esp for a dealer service dept! The timing belt drives the water pump, so it's a good idea to replace at the same time (or at least every other belt change). If your inclined, much cheaper to DIY (I know I will at 60k).
