Hyundai Elantra While not much larger than the accent, the Elantra offers similar room, but a sportier look and feel, as well as more power.

Default 02' Elantra error code 0441...please advise.

Hey, I'm back for your excellent advice. I have an 02' Elantra with 72,000 mi.. Yesterday my cel came on and I was 500 feet away from an Autozone so I made a quick turn into their drive. The reading was error code 0441. The salesman suspected loose cap but I had not put gas in the vehicle for about a week or so. So I opened the cap and retightened anyway. He said it will probably clear the code in about 20 or 30 turning the key cycles.

But I think there is probably something else going on and have to tell you a few more symptons. Whenever I start the engine (75% of the time) and the engine is cold (not the outside temperature) the idle remains high at about 2000 rpm, stays this way for about 1 min and 30 secs, unless I punch the gas to get it to go down before then.

Any and all advice of possible fixes would be welcome. Also, Should I disconnect the neg. battery to clear the code?

Thanks for your time pizzaman!!!!

A P0441 will NOT impact performance, and the only indication of the problem is the CEL.

Causes

A code P0441 could mean one or more of the following has happened:

* Bad vacuum switch
* Broken or damaged EVAP line or canister
* Open in PCM purge command circuit
* Open or short in Voltage feed circuit to Purge Solenoid
* Faulty purge solenoid
* Restriction in EVAP solenoid, line or canister
* Corrosion or resistance in purge connector
* Bad PCM

Possible Solutions

With a P0441 OBD-II trouble code
, diagnosis can be tricky at times. Here are some things to try:

* Common Chrysler fix - Replace Leak Detection Pump / LDP
* Repair damaged EVAP lines or canister
* Repair open or short in voltage feed circuit to Purge Solenoid
* Repair open in PCM purge command circuit
* Replace purge Solenoid
* Replace vacuum switch
* Repair restriction in Evap line or canister or soleniod
* Repair resistance in purge connector
* Replace PCM

Thanks jsinton for the quick response. Should I get rid of the cel by disconnecting the neg. battery terminal?

Hey! Just had that error code 0441 fixed. Had to have the PURGE CONTROL VALVE replaced. Just in case someone was interested or might need an idea of what to possibly diagnose in the future.

The valve was stuck in the open position. Thanks for your help.

Same thing has now happened to me. My car got the Check Engine light... P0441: Purge Valve Incorrect Flow.

In addition, It was a little hard to start when warm.

I was able to remove the Purge Valve, and clean it with carb cleaner. It was stuck open, but worked ok when done.

Exactly. I had the same thing. Code P0441 Purge Valve incorrect flow. Difficulty starting when warm. I took it off and cleaned it. It was not sealing or actuating properly, and I could suck air through it. After cleaning it, it was sealing tight. I put it back on. Worked ok.

1000 miles later, I get a code again. This time P0441 along with P0445. P0445 is short circuit purge valve, which means the valve is now bad electrically. I found a replacement from the junkyard $2. All is well again.
