Default 2001 Elantra - Cannot Pry Control Arm - Help!

I am trying to replace the left CV half-shaft on my 2001 Elantra and have removed every bolt/nut. The axle nut, brake rotor, and caliper have been removed. I also removed the nut that attaches the control arm to the steering hub and the bolt/nut that attaches the control arm to the sway bar, but I cannot pry the control arm loose. Is there some secret method for getting the control arm to swing down away from the hub?

What is crazy is I already replaced the right side CV half-shaft and I don't remember having this problem, but it was about 3 years ago.

Please note I have no rust at all in any part of my care frame or front end components (don't live in rust belt). Everything looks good - just the darned control arm will not swing down when I pry or hammer the heck out of it.

Thanks it advance for any help!

This is a really old thread, but I have to comment. I've got the same problem. after removing the lower ball joint nut I can't seem to get the stud to slide thru the bottom of the steering knuckle. I did this 6 months ago and don't remember having this problem.

Hyundai sells a "special tool". I think I used a really large crowbar last time and carefully pried them apart.

You could try soaking the joint with some penetrating oil or use heat. They apply pressure with a crowbar, hammer, ball joint separator or pickle fork.

Take a three pound hammer and smack the control arm near the ball joint
This will loosen the ball joint.
See video on youtube for replacing CV shaft.

Around 5 minutes into video

I know this is an old topic but thought some one might need the help.
