Default 2002 Elantra - Blinker kills speedo/odo

I just picked up a used 2002 Elantra and have a problem already. When I turn on the right blinker or the hazard lights, the speedo drops to zero and the odometer flashes. Left blinker works fine. In addition, the right blinker light does not flash inside the car, all the outside blinkers work.

Someone did put in an aftermarket radio.

Sounds like a short? Or is there a known issue with these cars?

Sounds like an incompetent radio installer screwed up your electrical system. That's not a common problem for Elantras.

Default Fixed maybe??

I took the dash apart, removed the radio, and discovered that it looks like the radio install is not the problem. All the radio wires are spliced into the radio harness just on the firewall side of the factory radio plug.

Step 2 was to remove the speedo head, upon removal, I noticed that one of the tabs that hold the main wire harness to the speedo head was broken, therefore allowing the plug to sit crooked in the socket. I removed the plug, reinserted it correctly, now the blinkers work fine and the odometer no longer flashes.

I think I may have it fixed. I will give it a test drive tomorrow.

Does the fix sound logical?

I hope that's all it was. Good find.
