Get that timing belt changed or buy a new car!
I didn't take the warning to change my timing belt on my 2004 elantra and paid dearly for it yesterday (at 66,000) - radiator melted into engine, warped gasket heads, etc. - a total mess!!! I ended up having to purchase a new 2010 Elantra cause there was no way I was going to put $3-5K to put in a used engine and still have problems.
Bottom line - if you are reading this and are close to 60,000 - spend the money (it's not cheap) and have it replaced or you will be buying a new car like I did!!!! :-)

My understanding of Timing belts is you check them at 60k, for any signs of wear. If they look fine, then replace at 120k.
I drive elantras 1,700 miles per week (all highway) and can tell you from experience that even at 120k they look new. One was 2001 elantra with 350k, and the 2009 has 250k . HB |

HB Anyone reading this thread, do not listen to the advice of Haskellb. You REPLACE the timing belt at 60K. A belt can look fine and still go at any time after 60K.for any signs of wear. |
