2005 Elantra coolant leak (with pics)
 

My 2005 Elantra has a coolant leak. It is clear to anyone - do I just need to tighten some clamps? Thank you! :)

Could be a bad hose or loose hose clamp, but it's hard to specifically say from the photos. Could be a pin hole leak in the top hose, leaking coolant down on the lower hose. Clean the area with water, make sure the coolant level is topped off and then start the engine. As the engine warms up and the cooling system pressurizes, you should see where the coolant is leaking from.

Did you ever find out what the issue was?

That location where you took the picture is also where the t-stat housing it. Possible pin hole, bad clamp on the hose, or the gasket might have a leak.

I was just going through this post and realized that my Elantra'05 has same issues. My car eats up a lot of coolant and engine has lots of dried coolant chips on it. But never had any other issues with this thing still goin on with my car.
Please update once you figure out wat is goin on, now I am planning to check my car as well.
Also that now I am goin to do wat ken99 said and wash my engine and check the leaks, I have a question is it ok to wash my engine with all electrical system bare and openly working?

My wife's car has this same problem. It has been in and out of the shop for close to 18 months. The shop replaced the hose twice now and tightened the clamps 3 times, then replaced the clamps twice. It still leaks, they have told us it apparently is an issue of where the hose is clamped and they can't seem to fix it. They said that we are just going to have to keep an eye on the coolant levels and refill it every so often.

What ever became of your coolant leak? Were you able to stop it, if so how? Our car started leaking from the same location

Guys, I have an '06 GLS hatchback (daughters car) with the same problem. The lead tech at our local dealership says they see this often, it is seepage from the thermostat housing that develops tiny pinhole leaks over time. His solution is to either replace the housing if it gets too bad, or to pull the hose, polish the contact area on the housing, put down a thin layer of permatex, and clamp the hose back on.


I am guessing it is some form of bi-metal electrolysis that occurs over the years and slowly eats away at the housing.
