2005 Elantra Rear brake issue

My daughter's Elantra's rear brakes were replaced this week at 12k miles. They were completely worn out with noise from wear indicators. Stangely, the front brakes are fine with 70% remaining. I am perplexed that a small light weight car like the Elantra could burn up rear brakes in 12k miles. Front one maybe, but rear. Dealer and Hyundai absolutely refused to warranty the work. They said my daughter must be driving the car with the emergency brake on (not true). Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions what could cause premature wear?

You have to join ElantraClub to read the thread, but check this thread out.

Once there, if you haver further questions, feel free to ask them. There are several Hyundai techs and even a Hyundai USA employee that post to that forum.

It could be a problem with the proportioning valve which divides the braking power between front and rear; it could be too much going to the rear. If it's a bad proportioning valve, it should be covered under warranty. I've heard of this happening with Elantras with rear disc brakes (which is what I have) but so far no problems yet for me at 14k miles (crossing fingers).
