Hyundai Elantra While not much larger than the accent, the Elantra offers similar room, but a sportier look and feel, as well as more power.

Default 97 Elantra Check engine 455

Hi all. I have a 97 Elantra and I was getting a 442 code that would go on and off. They it came on for good. I found a broken hose and it was fine for a while. Now it came back as a 455.
If I shut it off it takes 2-3 weeks to come back on
I see nothing.
This 103k car that I paid 500 for has been a driver for 1 year.
It uses a quart of oil every 2-3 weeks that im pretty sure is rings.
Not looking to spend, just drive it till it dies.

Is it safe to just keep going with the light on?

Many times a P0442 and a P0455 could just be a bad or loose gas cap. First try tightening the cap (must click at least 3 times). If that doesn't work, try replacing the cap with a new one from an auto parts store. If that doesn't work, I wouldn't worry too much about it since the car is as old as it is and using as much oil as it does.

Thanks Nova.
Strange. Only blows the oil on the highway (rpm)
Runs great around town, smooth and quite. 27.5 mpg 5 spd
No real dents but ugly maco type paint right over the decals and dings LOL

I bought the car about a year ago and had to do a renew in about 4 months
Now I'm do again in Feb and I'm not sure if I need a smog.

I know I can just reset the light the day before the test

Is is strange that it takes 2 weeks to come on with "the big leak" as opposed to the small 442 I was showing?
