Airbag replacement???

I had a accident in my 2005 elantra gt where my airbags went off with very minor damage to the car. I got an estimate from the dealership for just airbag replacement of $5000 which is out of the question. I am ordering all the parts on my own for way cheaper. I was wondering if it is dangerous to replace the bags myself or should i bring it to a body shop? I can do it I just don't want to hurt myself.

Also do I have to replace the clock spring aftter deployment? My cruise control and horn works fine. Also where can I get a clock spring?

RE: Airbag replacement???

I had a similar incident with a '99 ford taurus several years ago. Both front bags inflated and the passenger bag cracked the windshield. Each bag (dealer cost) was $1000 plus installation, so another $150. You will need new clock springs, and I'd definately have a body shop do the installation work. A proper repair bill will help a lot when it comes time to sell the vehicle. If you do install the bags yourself make sure that the battery is disconnected to prevent any accidental inflation.

For such a high cost it might be worth while to go through your insurance and have them pay the bill. Down the road you'll still be paying less then if you pay to get the car repaired!
