Default Dome light stays ON!!! Wont turn off.

I have a 2002 Elantra GS, 4 Door 2.0 engine and for some reason my dome light stays on when all the doors are closed. I have it set too Door but it stays on unless I move the slider to off. It does have a red door open indicator light on the dashboard but that turns off when all the door are closed but the dome light remains on. What should I be looking for?

A bad dome light switch or a ground on the other side of the bulb??

The red door open indicator going off when the doors are closed shows the door switch is working
Power goes to the dome light switch and then to the dome light when switch is on door
When the door opens, the door switch provides a ground for the circuit to turn the lamp on

Hi Avisitor. I thought it could be the switch so I removed the dome light and tested it with my multi-meter and it works just fine, no problem. I tested the wire harness without the switch connected and sure enough I am getting ground even with all the doors closed. I need to hunt for a wiring diagram for my dome light.

Just wondering, I am not sure if my GLS comes with a alarm system or what because under the hood, on the passenger side of the engine compartment there is a switch that is broken. This is not an add-on, it's from factory and it seem to be broken. Could this cause my dome light to stay on? I don't see how but I figured i'd ask anyways.

Thanks!

I am sorry.
All I got is the cheap Haynes manual for the electrical schematics.
It isn't very good.
But, the indication is that the hood and trunk light switches are not connected to the dome light circuit
However, the ETAC (Electronic Time & Alarm Control) module is connected with the left front door switch.
But doubt it would affect the dome circuit.
And I don't know if your car has an alarm or not.

The color of wire in the Haynes manual says coming off the dome switch that it is NCA (no color assigned)
And, then changes light green
Which then changes to Tan (or black/red .. black with red tracer).
Which then goes to the door switches with black/red colors

I would suspect the wire which is providing your ground to turn lamp on is shorted somewhere
Usual suspects are places where the wire would flex, or rub against anything
Sorry I can't help more.

Good luck

Thanks for your help! It gives me a starting point. I'll try to trace it back and I will report back. From what I know the car did came with a factory remote along with the key. Of course the remote does not work though. I am not sure if it has a alarm system on it.

The ETAC should help program the remote??
Locate the ETAC module ... usually behind the center console or ash tray
Key turned to on position
Find switch on it and move it to set. Press remote for 5 seconds (open door).
Put switch back to run mode. Test remote.
At least that is the way I heard it should be done.
Don't know for sure.
