Engine Won't Always Start - Elantra 2017
 

I am having an issue with my 2017 Elantra (pre-owned, certified, 48,000 miles). When I turn the ignition, I hear a series of clicks and the engine won't start. Headlights worked, radio worked, dash lights all on. I waited 20 minutes, and the engine started. I drove the car about 4 miles and no problems. The next day, I started the car right up and drove it for another four miles. No issues. No rough idling, no check engine light, nothing. Rode smooth and handled well. When I parked the car, I turned the ignition on. Started right up. I waited a few minutes after shutting the car off. Turned the ignition and heard the clicking again. The engine didn't start up. I did put some cheap gas in it prior to these issues though. Any ideas on what possible problems may be causing this stalling? I will be taking the car to the dealer soon.

This appears to be an electrical issue.
1. Clean the battery posts and connectors. Both positive and negative. Reconnect the cables and tighten them good.
2. Have the battery tested. It could be a bad battery.
3. If this does not solve the problem it could be a ground connection between the starter and the engine, or the engine to the body of the car.
4. If it is not that I think it may be a failing starter solenoid.

Somebody who knows how to use a voltmeter should be able to pin point the problem.

Starter solenoids are rather expensive. I had the same problems with my Pontiac Vibe and I put in a new starter. Your car is almost new. I am hopeful it is one of the cheaper reasons.

Would a solenoid be covered under a warranty?

Pre-owned certified, not even 2 years old? I am guessing that you have a bumper to bumper warranty. I would take it in.
