I have a 2001 Elantra with 63,000 mile, automatic. It's been meticulously maintained. However, recently the car has been idling at around 1500-2000rpm. Today, after driving, I parked the car and let it idle for a few seconds. All the sudden it started revving up to over 4000rpm. It was as if a ghost had been pushing on the gas peddle. Any ideas on what could be the problem?

That is usally a Vaccum Leak it just trying to find it thats hard check all vacuum hoses and connections for cracks or splits

 

You need to check your idle solanoid
