what you should also do is check to see if it goes over the half mark at idle. next time before you go for a drive also check the coolant level. make sure you don't have any leaks. normally sometimes could be your cooling fan taking a longer time than usual to come on causing he car to run hot(faulty temp sensor would cause that). good observation though.

Ok,
yeah, there are alot of things that could cause that temp gauge to read hot. Like MadIndian1 said, checking the coolant level before driving the car, Checking the cooling system for leaks after the engine has reached normally operating temperature. Another question for you is, did this happen when you had the ac on? Remember to check to make sure the radiator fan is coming on as well.

another thing you can check is the temp sending unit for the gauge, since you mentioned that the gauge went up your dad hit the brakes, so you can also have a poor connection. just check for the obvious things

To include that it is obviously winter and cold. You have been using your heater and the car has been overheating at times. Check around the heater core which is located on the passenger side in the engine capartment against the fire wall. Check both hoses hooked up to the heater core and also, check in the vehicle on the passenger side on the floor board way up front to see if it may be leaking there. That, is only if you have been losing coolant obviously. Good luck.
