How do I swap engine in a 2004 elantra.

I plan to replace the existing motor in my 2004 elantra with a new one. Can I pull the motor without pulling the transaxle? Or do I need to pull them together? The manual indicates it can be pulled out the top. Has anyone done this? Any special tricks?

Thanks Bob

Pull hood... and make sure you pull balancer off of engine. Motor come out top easily. Make sure you have a floor jack with a board under tranny to let it tilt at angle a little. Loosening front motor mount helps also. Motor can be out in about 30-45 minutes if you are mechanically inclined. If you struggle maybe 1-1.5 hrs. Have seen newbies take that long. No need to pull tranny just get all you torque converter bolts out and go slow when lifting engine to ck for anything you missed.

Not hard to do. Comes out the top.

Thing to do is get all the goodies off the front of the engine so you can pull engine from trans. You wil need to use a pry bar to open the gap betwen engine and trans as flex plate need to exit the bell housing.. Same goes fro setting engine back in, be a few chioce words maybe, take time, and make sure engine and trans sit back together as intended and all should be well.

how do I detach trans from motor?

The above sounds easy. However how do I disconnect the flywheel from the converter. I could not find a shield or port to remove the converter bolts. Do I need to pull the oil pan. The 2004 has a large aluminum pan that appears to cover the bottom of the trans near the flywheel.:confused::confused:

Remove starter..remove little black plastic piece by starter. Yurn over engine by hand and remove 17mm bolts. Think there are 4 .
