Just purchased a 2010 GLS, auto tranny shifting question

Just went from a 2002 GLS with a manual transmission to a 2010 GLS with automatic. Noticing that when I am easy on the gas, car shifts from 1st to 2nd around 2000 rpm but then rpm drops to 1500 and transmission/engine chugs like if you shift up in a manual transmission to soon for the speed of the car. Have to take foot off gas and reapply it for it to downshift sometimes.

When at the end of a side street pulling onto the main road and speeding up to 35 or so, does not happen. Seems like transmission wants to be driven firmly...if that makes sense....

Wonder if the shift points could be reprogrammed

Yes and no. Shift points can't be reprogrammed but the computer "learns" how you drive. If you just purchased this car, I'd suggest disconnecting the battery for a few minutes to clear the memory and then reconnect the battery. Then drive the car like you usually do. It will learn your driving style.

My old Taurus always did that, becouse I have a light foot. The pcm will shift much sooner (usually too soon), to try to save fuel, if you drive with a light foot. I had to drive my old car hard though several shift cycles to "make" it shift like I wanted to, but I shortly gave up on that, since after several cycles of slow driving would make it go back. I learned to put up with it, but I also learned how to feather the gas pedal just right so the trans will do what I want to. Also, don't use overdrive unless your staying above 40mph for a while, and not stopping, otherwise, it will be shifting alot from 3'rd-4'th. Guess what? I went back to a manual transmission car.

Thanks for the info. I also spoke with the dealership today and heard about the "learning your pattern" part. Said a lot of the Hyundais have lower shift points within the past year to improve economy.

I might wait a bit and see how if I just get used to it.

Not that I am into really modifying things at age 40 but it there any popular things to improve right off?
