Hyundai Elantra While not much larger than the accent, the Elantra offers similar room, but a sportier look and feel, as well as more power.

Default Motor ticks upon cold start up

My 2013 elantra sounds like it had low oil and has a rod tapping noise when its cold starting for about 2-3 miles after driving. I took it to a Hyundai dealer and they said normal operation. I argued that there is no way this is normal. It didnt sound like that new a year ago. He dismissed the problem. Its 5o miles to the next closest Hyundai dealer. Should I just keep the oil changed regularly and turn up the radio so I can't hear it when it cold start it? Someone said that a hyundai mechanic told him that unless you use a genuine Hyundai Oil Filter it will tap. I dont believe it.

Not absurd at all. Some aftermarket filters are more restrictive and reduce oil flow through the engine.

Well being I have owned many cars in my lfe (I'm 60) and never had to go to the dealer for an oil change, and never had a problem such as this before with regular oil changes, I'd say that it is absurd. You would think that out of Pennzoil, Quaker State, and all of the store bought oil filters that that would be as good as a Hyundai oil filter!

Well that wasn't it. 2 oil changes with genuine hyundai oil filters and the motor sounds like it has no oil at start up and still has a slight rod knock sound even after it warms up. No problem seen by the dealer service dept. My 2001 caravan with 190k sounds better.

But it could have been the cause. Prolonged use of non-Hyundai filters coud have starved the engine of oil and worn the bearings creating the knock you have now. Sorry to hear that.

Is there anything I can do now? Any additives? The dealer still says nothing is wrong. I know the way my car sounds is not right.

You could try a slightly thicker oil. What do you use now, 5W/20? I'd suggest a 0W/30 or a 5W/30.

Seems like they are saying that to cover themselves from a warranty issue. I do use the Hyundai oil filter but have done some looking and found out that
a company named Mann-Hummel makes the oil filters for Hyundai. Just so happens that Purolator One Filters are also made by Mann-Hummel.
Purchased both and found out that the Purolator One Filter PL14459 is a tad better with a Silicone Anti Drawback Valve. I use Full synthetic 5w-20 and they recommend using oil filters with the silicone anti drawback valve. Maybe next time I'll be using the Purolator one filter. Their filters are highly rated among others.
I have a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport Canyon Copper with the 2.4l GDi engine. Just sayin !!
