Need advice/ timing belt

1999 car. I was told that I was going to need my timing belt replace soon. Is this a DIY project I can do or do I need to take the car in to be worked on? How do I know it needs to be done? He told me to take care of it before the car breaks down because then it will be more trouble.
Any advice would help me. Being a 53 year old female makes me wonder if sometimes people do work on my car that does not need to be done. I am trying to learn what I can do myself.
Thanks for your help.

Timing belt is not optional. It gets changed every 60K miles. It's not a job for someone who is challenged by changing spark plugs or windshield wiper blades. It's a medium skill level car repair job.

Dear Madam,
Taking into account the high expense caused by a snapped timing belt, I suggest you leave this kind of repair to an expert. A Hyandai agent will usually also give you a year guarentee. Replacement of the timing belt is a must at certain service intervals.
