odb port dead

i have a 2000 elantra wagon and the check engine is on.I stopped at auto zone to have it read out. the guy reading it said the odb port is dead and he couldn't get a reading.anybody else have this problem and what did it turn out to be?any ideas would be appreciated!

You have probably already checked this but I would make sure that the ODB reader is compatiable with your car.

I have run into this before with AutoZone when trying to check another car I own. It required a different type of reader. So you might try another place to see if they can read it. Or google ODB to find the readers that will work on your car. Several sold by harbor freight work fine on my Elantra.

took the car to a mechanic

thanks for reply hyse09. i took the car to a mechanic today and he couldn't read the codes either. he said he thinks there is a problem with the computer. I'd still like to hear from someone that has had the same problem or maybe works on hyundai's.the auto zone reader didn't have a problem before so i don't think it's the reader.

Yep, the problem is the computer itself.
