Oil for a high-mileage 2004 Elantra GT.

Hi there,

I have a 2004 Elantra GT with 242,000 KM on her, and she still runs great! I am wanting to do what i can to preserve the engine and was considering synthetic oil. I read in this forum that if a car isn't broken in with synthetics, then it's not a wise idea to switch to them especially with a high mileage engine. I have also read that Valvoline is the best oil to use due to the fact that it still has a small quantity of zinc in it.

I am asking if anyone has suggestions/thoughts on what would be best for my engine at this stage of it's life.

I do 90% city driving, lots of starting and stopping, in a climate that is about 0 degrees Celsius in winter, and 24 degrees Celsius in summer.

Cheers, and thank you in advance!

Bull-S. Switch to synthetics at any time. However, I would only switch to synthetics to extend your oil change intervals. You could easily go 8,000km on regular oil, so if you switch, you could extend that to 12,500km on synthetics. Personally, I would go with a regular "high mileage" oil and replace it every 8,000km. Just do standard maintenance and it should last another 200,000km.

Sweet! Thanks NovaResource, i think i'll go for the high-mileage oil, i was under the impression the synthetics would be easier on the engine.

I appreciate your advice, cheers!

You dont need "high mileage" oil...

I gots 331,300+ on my Toyota with plain old Castrol GTX 5/30.. I drive 77 mile round trip 5 day a week, all interstate with about 10 minutes city due to lights..

Keep oil changed and clean, keep right on driving.
