P0016 code after timing belt change on 05 Elantra
 

I'm a newbie to the Hyundai scene. I just replaced the timing belt, roller, and tensioner on my 2005 Elantra. Engine runs fine but has a P0016 code now for cam/crank correlation. I think the belt may be off but need some input on how to check it and reset belt. Thanks in advance for any input.

If you changed the timing belt and the engine runs fine then you are no newbie to fixing cars.
And at this point in time, you may actually know more than me.
Before changing and redoing the timing again
Try changing the oil
I know it sounds stupid but it worked for my friend
Don't know if it was related or what.
Just tried it cause it was due and then the cleared the code and it never came back.
Besides, changing the oil isn't too expensive

Thanks. I'm not a newbie it's just my first Hyundai lol. I changed the oil a week ago. I will check marks again and if correct will do oil again. I also read something about the cam gear bolt could be bent but I don't think I put that much torque on it.

The oil thing was about how the engine advances the cam to try to get more power out of the engine.
If you changed the oil then don't bother to do it again.
It was just a thought.

Have read where some people tighten the timing belt but forget to check the timing marks again.
The cam moves a little and the timing is off by one tooth.

If it's off by a tooth, do I need to set cam at TDC and loosen belt to rotate crank to TDC and reinstall belt?

I can't tell you how to do this.
Haven't changed my timing belt, it is due around next year according to mileage.

Edit: Am looking forward to spending time changing it ... lol

Thanks for input. It was off a tooth. Had to loosen tension and lower belt enough to rotate crank 2 turns to get back on mark and tighten belt. The belt change took about 4 hrs and adjustment was about 30 min.

That really might help me to be more careful when I must do my timing belt
