whine/squeal when backing up

Hi,

My 2002 Elantra GLS manual transmission has developed a whine/squeal when backing up. When first starting it does not squeal but few seconds later, it begins (speed related?). I do not have to be turning the wheel as noted in other posts. It continues if I am rolling in neutral. It seems continuous, not cyclical, and is coming from the rear. It does not occur in the forward direction. We jacked up the rear and the wheels are tight and turn without squeal on both sides. I had the brakes checked and was told that they were fine at this time (despite 79k miles). The technician heard the squeal backing out of the bay. He drove it around a little. He, too, only heard the noise backing up and was uncertain as to the etiology.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Disc brake in the rear ??

Remove the caliper and get a real look at the inboard pad.. likely worn down to nothing and wear sensor dragging on the rotor...

Sure it not coming from front ?

Peel the calipers off and get a real look at the front also.

Thanks. The car does have front and rear disk brakes. I am not sure how thorough the tech was when inspecting the brakes though he stated that the front pads were 9/32 and rear 5/32. The squeal seems to be coming from the rear.

I was driving yesterday with my son, windows down, to listen carefully and we did notice a lower pitched, soft noise, almost like a grinding noise when I turn to the left but not to the right. the sound begins as I turn the wheel, not a hard turn. Even though they sound different I suspect the sounds are somehow related.
