Default Brand new car - can't turn the key?

Okay, so what am I doing wrong? I can't turn the kay on my brand new Elantra Touring to start it. It's stuck in the locked position. It's in Park, hand break on, I'm pushing down the other break and nothing is happening. Help!

Turn the steeing wheel slightly (whichever direction it will move). Sometimes the wheel interlock can jam the key.

That's what I was trying to do, but it wouldn't budge at all. I'm not a big strong man, so it was hard to move the wheel while trying to turn the key at the same time (I tried and tried but no luck). Had to call service and of course, the big tow truck driver was able to move the wheel enough to start the car.

I did get another hint from the service dept. at the dealer - set the hand brake first before you put the car in park. I'm going to try that from now on. I can't avoid parking on hills - I live in San Francisco. Guess I need to start lifting weights too.

That's good advice. ALWAYS use the parking brake regardless of transmission. It's always better for the parking brake to hold the car than the transmission (auto or manual).

Are you the bloke with the Silver ET with 17" wheels I saw a few weeks ago in SF? My ET is the 16" wheel variety with a Carbon Gray exterior.

Nope. That wasn't me. I've only seen one ET other than mine - in Salt Lake City last weekend (Red) during a drive from Calif. to Colo. and back. Mine is also a 16" Carbon Gray.
