Disappointing gas mileage in Elantra Touring

Hi Everyone,

I joined this forum to get your opinion about my little problem. I purchased a brand new 2011 ET in late July. It has about 1400 miles on it. I like the car a lot, but I have been quite underwhelmed by the gas mileage. Here are some examples of the last few fill-ups.

September 6:
12.492 gallons
222.8 miles
17.8354147 mpg city

August 19:
12.365 gallons
233 miles all city
18.8435099 mpg city

August 6:
12.42 gallons
349.3 miles
28.1239936 mpg hwy

All of these, but especially the city miles, are lower than advertised. Could there be extenuating circumstances? Very short trips in town? Constant AC? The real question is, should I contact the dealer about the problem?

Thanks for your help.

Automatic or manual. First, you have way too few miles to get a real idea if the fuel economy. The engine hasn't fully broken in yet. Second, all city driving with short trips and high use of the A/C will lower MPG.

Sorry, I should have specified, it's an automatic, with expected MPG of 23 and 30.

My mileage really didn't improve until I reached about 4k.

However, I never was really in the teens.

I drive a combination of highway and city, use the A/C most of the time and average 27.0 mpg. I have an automotic and just hit 27,000 miles.

Mileage with my 2009 kept increasing until it hit 18ooo then it stabilized.

Mileage

My 2011 Touring (SE/MT) got over 35 mpg on a recent highway trip. I can rely on 25 or 26 in city driving. It has about 5K miles. I will say this: a heavy load (like 4 passengers) will increase fuel consumption. I think your mileage warrants a visit to the dealer.

I have a 5-speed and can expect 26-28 in town; and I drive it like a sports car. Highway however, at 80mph I'm lucky to get 30. at 6omph I'll get 34-35. I recently read in Motor trend that all manufacturers are inflating their mpg.

Gas mileage

Wind resistance increases exponentially as speed rises, so decreasing gas mileage at 80 mph is to be expected.

Here's my gas mileage on my '09 ET:

There are some other folks on there recording their mileage for their ET's too. Mine bounces all over the place, but I generally get about 30'ish on average.
