I30 Petrol Air Intake
 

Hi again, just completed a mod which some people might want to do.
Havn't noticed any extra horseys tho but the sound is very nice.

Parts needed:

Screw Driver 2 Point Philips
6-8 Sockets and Rachet depending on Hose clamp clip
Flat blade
90mm Hose clamp/rings
3"/75mm 90 degrees bent and about 8" long 200mm Tubing for intake. Plastic, Rubber, metal, dicast, aluminium etc.

Pod Air Intake Filter (that can slip over the 3" pipe).


Remove original air box (4 clips).

Remove upper part of filter box.
Unscrew original black hose clamp attached to a pipe connected to the air box.

Remove top part of air box with air filter.

Install intake tube into rubber air hose attached to intake manifold.

I used umm spit to lubricate the hose and a flat blade screw driver to
expand the rubber pipe over the 3". It took awhile but the result is good.

Be sure to measure pipe for correct length as once the intake pipe is installed. You do not want to take it out again!!

I installed the pod filter after the connecting intake pipe because it was a
bitch to install.

Install hose clamps on to air intake tube, (you can not use original hose clamp i used a 90mm hose clamp, also
you will notice there are two notches on the orginal rubber pipe. Cut these off with side cutters. If you plan to revert back to orginal
use hose clamp) and on pod filter.

I used a fairly long piece of pipe so the pod filter sat on the bottom of the
air box. So i did not need to secure it to the car.

If wanting to secure to car.

Use a strip of aluminium aprox 20mm x 80mm and attach to bottom airbox
with self drilling screws and/or bolts. Use cable ties or hose clamp bracket (that is designed to be bolted to motor or body, they generally have a aluminum bracket and hole at bottom).

The reason why i didn't, was because i did not want to cause damage to the car airbox by drilling holes etc. As it would affect resale value.

I am planning on doing a longer intake when I get a Touring this winter by removing the stock box completely. I have a couple of questions for you regarding the small tube going into the intake tube near the throttle body. Does this appear to just be a vacuum tube (presumably for the crankcase vent system)? Also, I am assuming that you fit your piping directly onto the MAF sensor, which is right before the stock box, correct? How is the noise? Any droning at cruising speed? Thanks for your help in advance.

That's not a vacuum tube but it is part of the PCV system. That's just a tube that supplies filtered air from the intake to the crankcase.

I was under the impression that the PCV system worked in the opposite direction. The tube pulls gases from the crankcase into the intake as the pressure in the crankcase builds during operation. It's more of an anti-pollution device I believe. When I owned an rx-8 we slapped a breather on the pcv tube for a cleaner intake charge rather than recycling that air/gunk back through the intake.

Anyways, back to the point. I was only wondering so that when I did my intake I did not unhook something I knew nothing about. I can handle a pcv valve if that's all it is. Thanks!

Just to calrify, it's not the PCV, it's a breather tube.

The breather tube passes filtered air from the intake (before the throttle body) to the crankcase. The PCV passes dirty vapors from the crankcase to the intake manifold (aftert he throttle body).

Thanks for the diagram, that really explains to me how the PCV system actually works.

I installed it after all the sensors etc, the noise is a fairly loud compared to stock. It echo's/grumble when accelerating. Little to no noise at all whilst driving at constant speed.

I had a Hilux/Vigo Sr 4 litre petrol and did custom intake on that intake about 12" long and could only hear from bout 3,500 rpm but it was incredibly loud!

This is a constant hum almost similar to subi with no exhaust or turbo lol. Obviously the harder you push the louder it is. Also depending on the tubing you use alloy/aluminum, steel etc. I used a plastic chrome tube.

I was very impressed and seems to go better also.
