Deep engine noise in 2010 Sante Fe
Good day..we live in Northern BC and are having issues with our new to us, 2010 Santa Fe. 20,000k's.
We do not have a Hyundai shop within 8 hours so we use a Hyundai approved Honda dealership in Terrace. The problem: on a cold start, it is making what I can only describe as a very deep grumbling sound lasting 15-20 seconds. Honda feller suggests noisy valve train. Any input would be great. Gary |
How cold is it there and what weight oil are you using?

It has dropped to minus 30C and in truth, I don't what weight oil is in. It was serviced for winter at the Honda shop in Prince George, where purchased in November.

The oil may be too thick. -30C is cold. I'd suggest nothing thicker than 5w20. 0w20 if it's going to be that cold most of the time.

HHmmm...okay NoveR...I will check on the oil weight presently in and will also investigate a block heater installation. In your opinion...is damage being incurred as things are now?

If the noise is from a lack of oil, yes, there would be damage. Is the oil light on for those 15-20 seconds at startup?

Yes, I am very aware of damage due to low oil and no, the low oil light does not come on. Recalling too, that the engine has been checked by the Honda tech and this is his diagnosis, with no mention of wrong oil or otherwise.

Something just occurred to me...what engine is in your SF? I remember the 3.3 and 3.8L Lambda motor in the Azera and Sonata (back around 2006 or 2007) had a problem with the timing chain tensioner that would cause a startup noise. I believe there was a recall or TSB on it. Let me see if I can find the info about it.

also if it is the 2.7 or 2.4 it could be the oilfilter.there was a sign at my dealers that stated if it was the filter you would have to pay for a new one plus labor.something about some filters bypass valve was affected by the cold especially the cheap frams and stp filters.
