Immobiliser problem again
I had problems with the immobiliser not allowing the engine to start on my mk1 Santa Fe 2.0 crtd. This seemed to be resolved with help from the forum by cutting out the connector from the ignition switch immobiliser coil and soldering the wires together. However after some time it started to give problems again, not coming off to allow the engine to start. Taking the key in and out repeatedly and tapping the ignition switch eventually would get the immobiliser to come off and allow it to start, but then it started to come on when driving, stopping the engine, which could be seriously dangerous, so decided to send the ecu off to get the immobiliser programmed out. My problem is that I now have to disconnect all the plugs from the Smartra immobiliser unit, but cannot find where the unit is. The immobiliser coil wires disappear into a thick bundle of wires so cannot follow them. Does anyone know where the immobiliser unit is on this car?
After hours of fruitless searching, I finally found the immobiliser. With both prop tunnel sides removed and putting head upside down in the passenger footwell, could just see the silver rivet-like head of the fastener on the centre line of the car immediately behind the ash tray. The immobiliser itself was completely hidden as was the electric plug into it, and also the nut fastening it. Behind the ashtray is a steel plate and electrical fitting blocking access to the nut. An absolute pig of a job to remove the nut, then just as difficult to actually get the unit out. Need to take off the tray under the ignition switch to help with access. Hard to imagine how it could have been any harder to get to and remove - perhaps that was intentional.
Everything back together now with the immobiliser delete ecu and it has started OK. Just hope thats the problem finally solved!
