Key broken off
 

Just bought my 2004 Santa Fe. P.O had broken off the ignition key in the ignition switch. If you place the top half of the broken key into the switch it turns and everything operates fine. Anyone know the procedure for removing the cylinder from the ignition switch? Any other ideas on how to remove the broken bottom half of the key from the switch?

Drop the left lower dash panel

turn key cylinder to ACC

look down the side of the housing that key cylinder fits into, there will be a hole with a button.. use something to push in on the button, and pull the key cylinder out of the housing... need to unplug the white wire connector too.

Go to dealer and obtian key code if you not have it, and pick up a Hyundai blank if desired

take the cylinder to the locksmith shop for removal of broken key, and cutting of new key..

re-install cylinder

I just tossed a good key cylinder for Santa Fe recently, think all it needed was clean up..

If you dont feel like dinking with it, call a locksmith.

We charged something like $300 for new cylinder and re-code at locksmith... taking it to locksmith might only cost you maybe $100 tops

Thanks for your input sbr711. I took the easy route and visited a locksmith. I was quoted $10 if they could fish the broken piece out and $55 if they had to resort to removing the lock. It took him a little while but he finally fished the bottom half of the key out of the ignition switch. So for less than $20 the problem is solved, and I have a freshly cut replacement key to boot.
