Default power steering pump

I replaced my power steering pump on my 2005 Santa fe last weekend. However, the steering is hard to turn sometimes. Feels like there isn't any steering at all. Then the next time vehicle turns freely. Any suggestions?? Txs

I have had the same issue after power steering pump replacement in my 2003 Santa Fe. Also flushed the existing fluid and cleaned the reservoir/screen, but system whines and is intermittently hard to steer. Did you find a resolution?

Did you replace the pump with OEM or after market?
Trying to see if that makes any difference??

My power steering is starting to whine
So, a readjusted the belt a little looser
But, I am thinking that sooner or later it will need replacing

The pump replacement was not an OEM........don't think that makes much difference. After the flush, reservoir cleaning and pump replacement, a bit baffled that I still get a whine and intermittently difficult steering; especially when going very slowly or turning the wheels when stopped. Would appreciate anyone's insight on this.

Hi dmccarthy, i have had the same issue. I replaced with a no-OEM power steering pump, and 6 months later, failed again.

Now I replaced with and genuine power steering pump and works fine.

Another thing, the tires that I had were bigger than the recommended, but now I replaced with the recommended size of tires, and the power steering works better.

Rack and pinion faulty-my guess.Clogged system somewhere, leaking seals, pipes. Other whining-bad ball bearing in the pump.Aftermarket pump will last longer than 6 months.Use Castrol synthetic ATF transmission fluid for that pump-red color,or similar, but not any PS pump fluid-vanes inside the pump need good juice to buid-up enough pressure in any conditions.
