just bought a second hand SF V6
(love it)
was wondering what use was the open rear window?
if any?

I don't understand your question. What are you asking?

The ability to open the rear window allows you to put stuff in the back of the car without opening the whole hatch.

It also allows you to drive with a long object on the back the rear hatch closed. You can open the window to allow the object to stick out.
