Transmission oil change
 

Hi Guys
I’m a new boy on the block so I apologise if I’m covering old ground.
I had my S/F 2006 model recently serviced by a non Hyundai garage who did a good job at a much lower cost. The mechanic who did the work said the transmission would require an oil change soon.
There is now 40000 miles on the clock so I’m guessing its due.
Having talked this over with a couple of enthusiasts they recommend that Hyundai do this particular job because they know what they’re doing.
This may well be the case but when Hyundai charges over £400 to rectify using the wrong fuel (That’s without transporter costs) I’m wondering if the £100 quote for an oil change is another rip off.
Is there anything unusual about this job that warrants the attention of Hyundai?

The automatic oil should be drained and refilled every 30,000 miles. Having a non-Hyundai mechanic do it is fine as long as the know to only use SP-III fluid for your Santa Fe. Using anything elase will damage your transmission. Some non-Hyundai shops will just use a more common fluid like Dexron because that's what they use in most other cars and don't know that Hyundai requires a very specific fluid.

Thanks Nova for the advise, I should have mentioned my Santa Fe has manual transmission.
According to the book it looks like I need 1.8 Lt of MTF 75W/85.
Is the fluid as critical for a manual, just in case I'm unlucky and pick a head strong mechanic with has his own ideas?

Ah, that makes a big difference. I guess I'm used to most Santa Fe's having an automatic that I assumed incorrectly you had one.

The manual gear oil choice isn't as critical as long as you use the correct weight and an API GL4 oil. Do not let them use GL5 oil because that will cause problems.
