2002 Sonata rev problems
I just boutht a 2002 Sonata yesterday. It drove fine on the test drive. On my way home, the check engine light came on. Shortly after, as my wife was driving it while following me, she said she pushed the cruise control button and the engine started to rev up and then would go back down. It has continued to do so even after pushing cruise control button to off. I don't know if the cruise control button has anything to do with it on not, but is there anyone that can help with this problem. I bought this car for my son, and I would love for him to be able to drive it soon. Thanks!
Prime suspect would be the cruise control servo or its actuator cable. Just disconnect that from your throttle linkage and then test again. Next suspect is the linkage/cable to/from the accelerator pedal.
Ok, after the car sat overnight, I took it to the local parts store to have them check the codes for me. There was no rev problems, so I decided try the cruise control and after I pushed the button to set the cruise, it started up again. When I came home I disconnected the battery while I ran some errands. I hooked the battery up and took the car for a drive again. The check engine light was off and it ran fine. So obviously I told my son to not use the cruise for the time being. Has driven fine so far.
Agreed.

I am happy to hear that you have likely narrowed this down to the cruise control, I hope that it is an easy fix. If you need any of the parts mentioned above by e3tom I have them available. There are a few different versions depending on the vehicle options, the VIN would allow me to find the exact part for your car. I have listed a few example parts below and I have also attached a diagram.
Cruise Control Actuators (callout 96440): 96440-2D100 (ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY - CRUISE CONTROL made by Hyundai. #964402D100), 96440-38100 (ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY - CRUISE CONTROL made by Hyundai. #9644038100), and 96440-38500 (ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY - CRUISE CONTROL made by Hyundai. #9644038500)
Cruise Cable (callout 96430A): 96430-38001 (CABLE ASSEMBLY - CRUISE made by Hyundai. #9643038001) and 96430-38101 (CABLE ASSEMBLY - CRUISE made by Hyundai. #9643038101)
