Hi Everyone,

I have an '09 Sonata and needed to reach down in the base of the gear lever to remove some coins that my son had somehow managed to insert in there (Don't ask me, I don't know how he did it). Researched the forums but couldn't find anything that told me how to go about opening up the center console so tinkered around for a bit and managed to get the job done. I am here to share my experience (and pictures) so that anyone else who has an inquisitive (restless) child might benefit from it someday too!

I take no responsibility if you break anything. If you do, you've already bought it!!!

------------------------------

The beginning. Here is a picture of how it looked before I reached for the screw driver .............

------------------------------

Pull the Gear Lever up to take it out

------------------------------

Insert a flat tipped screw driver and gently pry open the Gear Lever Base. I started from the right corner and worked my way around the panel to remove all the grips

------------------------------

Disconnect the Gear Lever Connection to completely remove the panel out of the way

------------------------------

Now we have to remove the two (right and left) center fascia.
1. Open the bottom Front Console Pocket
2. Hold the bottom of the silver fascia with your hand
3. Insert a flat tipped screw driver in the location shown and gently try to unhook the grip. It will pop out with a little pressure.
4. There are 3 grips and then we can completely remove the part

------------------------------

After removing both the right and left fascia, we can reach the bottom pocket of the front console. Remove the 4 screws to take out the bottom pocket and remove the connection to the power source.

------------------------------

After removing the bottom pocket I was able to reach into the base of the gear lever and removed a couple of $$$s which my son had saved in there!

------------------------------

Installation is the reverse of the above routine. Hope you never have to do it becuase the surfaces are easily scratched and the clips can be broken. I was lucky that I could put everything back together and found no spare screws or clips lying about on the floor after I finished my work!

Happy Driving!

RE: 2009 Sonata GLS - Opening the Center Console

:) .......... It was all of $4 and change plus some car wash tokens. If you're serious about all forum members chipping in to do something for me ..... I'll send you a list of stuff that I need for my Sonata :D:D:D:D:D:D

Actually I needed to get rid of those coins because they made a noise in there that was driving me nuts. Its much quieter inside the car now:)

hmm can anyone tell me what I did wrong with the pictures? Y don't they appear in the post???
