Check Engine Light Help....

The check engine light in my husbands Sonata came on so we took it to Auto Zone for the diagnostic and it came up with the code P0011/Camshaft Position Actuator Bank 1...what is this, and how is it fixed?? The car's no longer under warranty so we are going to have to pay for this out of pocket, and the guy at Auto Zone was no help, b/c he had no idea what the code meant or what it was.

Thanks 4 the help!

What year is the car and which engine (V6 or 4 cylinder) does it have?

This engine employs a variable cam timing mechanism that is failing or has failed. I would guess it is not starting very easy or running very smoothly once it does start. That mechanism needs to be replaced as soon as possible. Since the car is off warranty, you can use which ever mechanic you choose.

Item #3, the CVVT assembly.

Sorry, but this is first time I have heard of problems with one of these. The head cover, timing chain cover and the timing chain assembly has to be removed, which means a number items like pulleys, the water pump, the power steering pump, some ignition parts, etc, have to be be removed or partially dismantled first. Any seals or gaskets associated with those items will need to be replaced. If the chain tensioner or guide show any signs of wear, those should be replaced as well. I doubt the the CVVT assembly (which will likely have to come from Hyundai) will be a cheap item. I could be wrong, but I can't see this repair (with labor) costing less than $1,000. Ask for an estimate or estimates before before you commit to have it repaired.
