computer upgrade?
 

My brand new 09 sonata has the stock odometer with dual trip meters. It would be kinda neat to have the optional computer that can display various things like instant mpg etc.

Is it just a matter of installing or reprogramming a chip? Can it be done at a reasonable cost?

It can't be done easily. A cheaper and easier way to get what you want woudl be to buy a ScanGuage II: http://www.scangauge.com/

When you buy one, be sure to tell them it's for a Hyundai as most Hyundais need a special cable to prevent the speedo for not working.

Don't really want to muck things up with aftermarket stuff. It's not that important to me. Oh well. It was worth asking about. Thanks.

You would have to replace the entire speedo-head assembly which would be a bucket-full of cash. The trip computer/odometer integrated into the speedometer controller.
