engine light / Code reading and Diagnostic

Hi.. my father in-law has recently purchased a 2000 Sonata with about 30K on it .. yesterday, the check engine light came on and he reported that while drving the engine was acting up, riding a bit rough or shaky .. however, both the light and engine problems went away after a few miles.. my question is:

How can I ready the codes in the Sonata? I knew how to do this manually without the use of a computer on my old car .. Can the same be done on this car by connecting the 2 wires (usually under the dash) together and read the number of blinks on the engine light?

If not, what is a good diagnostic computer to buy?

Where can I find a list of code and their meaning.

Thanks.

If you are in the U.S. and near an AutoZone store, many of them will read the codes for free (including an explanation of the fault code). You can't do it without a reader.

Ok ..i did a reading on the car and it gave a code for "cylinder 2 mis-fire" . . any idea what could casue that? I thought i start changing the spark plugs .. but have no idea what other things could casue a mis-fire.

OK....I have a question about a 91 Sonata.
Is there a way to read the codes on that without a computer?
I have a 86.5 Supra and I dont need a computer to get those codes. Is it only the newer cars....or do I need it for the 91 as well.
My car has been down for months....any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
