Has anyone attempted to replace transmission at home on 03?

This is why I was given this car for nothing. It's got 130,000 miles and the engine runs smooth. Transmission is shot. If you put it in drive and rev it about 5K it will lunge forward a few feet and if you put it in Reverse and do the same thing it will go forward. It won't move freely in any gear except of course Neutral. I just want to see if it's possible to get it driving again with a lower mileage used transmission that I've found for $150. I definitely realize the car isn't worth investing in a rebuilt or remanufactured transmission. I've removed/installed several large transmissions in all rear drive vehicles but never a front wheel drive. I'm seeing that proper instructions say to remove the subframe. Not that I'm for sure going to attempt it but has anyone here successfully removed and reinstalled a transmission in one of these at a home garage? I was quoted $800 by a good shop I know to install it with the fluid. I'd be $1000 into it. If I do nothing else to the car. My friend that's a mechanic says he can get it out without removing the frame but I don't see how.
