Shiftronic sticks sometimes

I purchased recently a 2007 Hyundai Sonata V6. When I use the Shiftronic, it seems to not rebound back to the center position sometimes. It's like it gets stuck a bit (both in + or in -) before it rebounds. Someone said to apply silicone spray: A) will this work and how to I apply it? B) is there a better suggestion?

Much obliged for any information.

RE: Shiftronic sticks sometimes

I haven't had this issue with my 2006 Sonata. In my opinion, unless you can see evidence of something being spilled into that area such as a soft drink that would cause it to stick (something that would not be covered under warranty), I would take it into a Hyundai dealer to have checked out.

If your car is no longer under warranty and you want to tackle the problem yourself you might want to try to remove the shift plate/console centre cover to see underneath to check for something that might be causing it.

Now that you mention it, there is a coffee stain on the passenger seat. A spilled coffee must have caused it. Does any know: A) how to remove the shift plate or where to find this info? B) how to clean it?

I have read in other forums (for other makes) that people removed the plate/console somehow and either cleaned it with: water, soap and water, or electronic contact cleaner. Or, they had to replace it (in extreme situations) to the tune of approx $1000.

A) how to remove the shift plate or where to find this info?
Removal of the shift knob is explained in the attached technical service bulletin (2 pages). Instructions for the Sonata are on the second page.

The cover plate is pressed in place. Use a flat blade to gently pry up along the edges to loosen. With the knob off, the cover should slide off the top of the shifter. If you have seat heater switches, you will need to unplug those to remove the cover plate.

B) how to clean it?
A damp sponge may be all that is needed. Use qtips to access crevices. I would avoid flooding the area. Judicious use of a spray lubricant like WD40 might be warranted, but I think I would avoid using any silicon-based spray lube since it is hard on rubber components that may be present.
