Sonata SE 2009 Rear Brake Issues
 

Hi all, the dealer recommended the following:

- Flush dirty brake fluid: $100
- Replace rear right brake caliper: $300
- Replace brake pads, rear & machine discs: $300

They told me the caliper was clamping down and wearing out the brakes (almost at legal limit)

About a year and a half ago (30K miles ago), they did the same services for exploded rear caliper cup seal.

What should I do? Is this faulty service on the dealer's part or bad product issue?

I have 113K miles on my car.

If you can do it yourself then you could probably cut that bill to less than half

You could probably get new set of calipers and rotors for both sides with the price the dealership quoted for one side.

Brakes are considered wear items. So probably not covered by warranty.
There is no real way to absolutely confirm or deny whether it is bad parts or what.
It is a machine and stuff happens. Could it have been bad brake fluid?? Yes.
Did you flush your brake fluid last time you had serviced the rear brakes?
Have you heard of a rash of bad parts or break downs at this dealership?

I'm getting quotes from other places and may buy the parts myself and ask someone I know to do it.

Question:

What do they mean by "machine discs"? I'm confused because the dealer said my rotors are fine. Does that mean I only need brake pads?

Machine the discs ... means they will resurface the rotors by cutting them
They put the rotors on a machine that turns the rotors while a high speed cutter takes a small piece off the surface of the rotors.
If the dealer is saying one thing and asking you to pay for it ... ?
Well, you know they are trying to make a profit?

All in all, it's a great car except for the rear brake problem.
I own 2-2009 Sonata GLS. The first had a rear caliper problem early on. The second, has had the same problem as of late. I've been to lazy to replace until now.

My right rear caliper would freeze and would wear the pad prematurely. It would wear into the rotor in under 2k miles from new.

A few days ago, I replaced everything.
both rear calipers,
both rear brake hoses,
both rotors
rear pads
2 cans of brake cleaner.

I got everything at Advance auto which is local to me. Found some online coupons.
My total out of pocket was just shy of $200 for everything. I did the labor myself. Took about 2 hours in all.

If your having problem with your brakes, just fix them yourself. It's easy enough. If your a novice, check youtube. They have lots of videos and some are specific to the Sonata.
