Sonata V6 timing mechanism

Does the 3.3 liter V6 in the Sonata use a timing belt or chain mechanism? Having recently switched from a Nissan V6 which had a belt that needed routine replacement, I don't wish to miss this maintenance item. Belt replacement is not mentioned in the owners manual, but I see other Hyundai models/engines are designed with the belts and I'd feel more comfortable knowing the exact situation.

RE: Sonata V6 timing mechanism

Nevermind. Another forum member asked about an engine noise on startup with a late model Sonata V6. It was diagnosed as a faulty chain tightener.

P.S. Having just read the forum rules, I apologize for the double post on this thread.

hey ken , the sonata with the 3.3 carry 2 timing chain tensioners that on some models make a rattling noise on cold start up . it goes away quickly . the dealership will replace those tensioners under warranty .. it is still a good car one of the best in hyundais fleet

Yep, the older 2.7 Delta V6 uses a belt while the newer 3.3L and 3.8 Lambda V6 use chains.
