Soot and black oil
 

We have a new 2011 Sonata with 3800 miles. I noticed that the engine oil was almost black. The Hyunadi maintaince schedule does not require oil change until 7500 miles. The dealer noted that the oil should be changed at 3700 miles due to driving conditions in Vermont. I find this hard to believe since most of our driving is on paved roads and it is summer.
Because of the black oil that I noticed I checked the exhaust pipe thinking it may be a more serious engine proble. Sure enough the pipe is coated with an oily black soot. I also asked about this and was told it is normal and that they checked another 2011 Sonata in the lot and it also had the black soot in the tailpipe.
Having driven for over 50 years a sooty tailpipe is not normal. Also I fear that down the road we will have other problems possibly with the catalytic converter.
Does anyone have the same problem and what have you done ( if anything)

There are 2 service schedules for your car, regular and severe service. 7500 miles is for regular driving but most people drive under what is considered severe. Idling a lot, stop and go city driving, hills, short trips, etc. I'd suggest changing your oil now.

Friend, anytime the oil is black, immediately change the oil. When it is black that means it has been doing its job, but its time is up.

The black soot is probably a deeper problem, I don't mean to upset you, but have it checked out. Anyone who says it is "normal" for a new vehicle to have black soot doesn't know what they are talking about or have been paid off to say that. :eek:

If you can, and are willing, trade your vehicle in. Otherwise make generous use of the 100k warranty. And I don't care what the dealership says, you should change your oil every 2-3k to be on the safe side!
