SYTHETIC OIL & CHANGE INTERVAL?
I have a new 2006 Sonata. I'm thinking about using synthetic oil starting w/my first change @ 3500 miles.
My question is this - How many miles are normal between changes w/out causing any engine harm? Please advise me on this. Thanks all |

. Most everyone is going to think I'm nuts but I have been using Mobil 1 since its inception in the early 70s and I change my oil only once a year in my 4 cars. I've used it in both foreign and domestic cars. Everything from Toyota's, Hyundai's, Cadillac's, Fords, Chrysler's, Mercedes 450SEL and even a used 1969 Silver Shadow Rolls Royce and many others. I average about 20-30k mi a year and never had any engine failure due to oil related problems. In fact, the only engine failure I ever had was with a used Toyota whos timing belt failed on me. Always had consistant gas milage and so on. I have not used any other oil in any new or used car I bought since Mobil 1 came out. In fact, when ever I buy a new car, the first place I stop after signing the papers at the dealer is the oil change place and have them replace the conventional oil with Mobil 1. Yes, 5 mi on the odometer and it gets an oil change. . . |

u should change the oil every 3 months or every 7,000 miles what ever comes first if u whant to have and keep a nice clean engine.

RE: SYTHETIC OIL & CHANGE INTERVAL?
synthetic oil should be changed between 5 and 6 thousand miles. It costs about double, but it is worth it.

I just do it every 3000miles or 3months even with synthetic

RE: SYTHETIC OIL & CHANGE INTERVAL?
The only advantages of synthetic over conventional oil is the slower rate of viscosity shear-down at operating temperatures, and a slightly higher flash-point in most cases. Conventional and synthetics contain mostly the same additives, so their ability to keep the engine clean is about the same.
For the last 20+ years, car manufacturers have been recommending 7500 mile or 1-year oil change intervals under ideal driving conditions (mostly highway miles) using conventional engine oil. Stop-n-go driving, and short trips leads to oil contamination which necessitates a shorter change interval of 3000 miles or 3 months that everyone's so happy with. Synthetic's are just as adversely affected by contamination as is conventional oil. So, if you're going to do 3000 mile oil changes, paying 2-3 times as much for synthetic formulations is a waste of money. If you're going to go 15,000 miles between changes, then you're better off with synthetics. |
